The new movie Marley & Me, based on the New York times bestseller, defines Marley's character as "...the world's worst dog." As quaint as this tag might sound, it sells Marley short. Yes, I know we are supposed to chuckle at all the trouble he finds himself in, and that his family really does love him to pieces, but for arguments sake, I'd like to turn the tables on this notion of 'the world's worst dog.'
What about the World's Greatest Dog? We happen to have two such dogs in our family. You have them in yours. Let me brag to you about why my dogs are the Worlds Greatest Dogs:
1. They listen to me... with interest.
2. Even when I refuse to give in (no cookies!), they know how to make me give in (oh alright!).
3. They sleep through the night.
4. The keep me in shape by walking me three times per day.
5. They are survivors, having been street dogs in Mexico before we adopted them.
And I guess that is truly the reason why my two girls represent what it means to be a great dog. They struggled and suffered, were rescued and adopted, yet find love in their hearts for myself and my family no matter their past experiences.
I know this is a long shot and breeders everywhere will wish they could throw rotten tomato's at me, but what if Marley, a purpose bred, paid for pooch, had been a rescue dog instead? I wonder if his family would have learned the same lessons Marley's outrageous behaviors taught them about the important things in life?
Still, as one who loves dogs, who appreciates the way they think, how they act and the choices they make, I would love to know about your 'Worlds Greatest Dog.' Please take a minute to brag about your dog. Thanks and have a yappy day!
